Bergaz asks Canarias when the rehabilitation of the Modernist House of Famara will begin

The socialist deputy and municipal spokesperson in Teguise, Marcos Bergaz, has registered a question addressed to the Government of the Canary Islands to know the planned schedule for the start of the rehabilitation works of the Modernist House of La Caleta de Famara.

The initiative, addressed to the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín (CC), coincides with the start of the new parliamentary session and seeks to know the forecast for an action announced by the regional Executive last December.

At that time, the Government of the Canary Islands communicated the granting of a direct subsidy of 149,000 euros to the Diocese of Canarias, owner of the property, intended for the consolidation and conservation of the facade, under the headline: "The Government assumes the rehabilitation of the facade of the Modernist House of Famara".

For its part, the Teguise City Council granted the license for the restoration of the facade in February 2025 and, last July, authorized the interior conservation and consolidation works of the property. Despite this, a date or schedule for the start of the works is still unknown.

Given these precedents, Bergaz considers it "appropriate to know what the planned schedule is for the start of its necessary rehabilitation and the scope of the action financed by the Government of the Canary Islands".

The deputy also underlines the state of deterioration of the building and the need to start this action as soon as possible.

“The Casa del Cura, the Hotelito, or the Modernist House of Luis Ramírez are part of the landscape, history, and memory of La Caleta de Famara. At this rate, there will be little left to restore if action is not taken soon,” he states.

For Bergaz, the recovery of the property represents an opportunity to preserve and enhance a unique piece of Famara's heritage and, at the same time, continue advancing in the conservation of the historical, architectural, and ethnographic heritage of Teguise.

In this regard, he considers it necessary to "continue betting on different instruments and actions linked to municipal heritage, such as the eternal Special Plan for the Historic Site of La Villa de Teguise, the pending opening of the historic Casa Torres, or the conservation and enhancement of other heritage elements of the municipality".

“Teguise has an extraordinary heritage that is part of our identity and our history. Taking care of it, preserving it, and valuing it is a responsibility that we must promote. The recovery of this Modernist House is a good example of the importance of preserving our heritage and passing it on to future generations,” concludes Bergaz.

A singular example of modernist architecture

Also known as El Hotelito or Casa del Cura, it was built in 1933 by order of the Lanzarote philanthropist Luis Ramírez as a summer residence.

The building stands out for its modernist architecture, with influences from Catalan Art Nouveau and decoration inspired by marine motifs, with elements such as burgados, conch shells, or octopuses that contribute to its uniqueness within the architectural heritage of Lanzarote.

Currently, the property belongs to the Diocese of the Canary Islands.
