The National Police arrested a Basque lawyer in Lanzarote on Wednesday night for his alleged connection with the Segi organization, which is considered the breeding ground for ETA, as part of an anti-terrorist operation in which seven other people have been arrested in the Basque Country, Navarra and Madrid.

Haritz Escudero Zuloaga, as the detainee is called, is a native of Vizcaya and was on vacation on the island. The arrest occurred at the Hotel San Antonio in Puerto del Carmen, around 9 p.m., when the National Police entered the establishment and took the detainee away in handcuffs through the staff door, according to some sources. Apparently, the Police had been watching Haritz Escudero for a few days.

According to El País, the Police suspect that Haritz Escudero, along with another of the detainees in Madrid and also a lawyer, Haizea Ziluaga, are two of the new leaders of the illegal organization Segi.

Both lawyers, El País points out, are accused of having gone beyond their mere functions as lawyers and of having carried out indoctrination and dissemination of slogans at the service of the terrorist group ETA.

Escudero and Ziluaga share a law firm with Arantza Zulueta, who was arrested last April, along with two other lawyers, Jon Enparantza and Iker Sarriegi, accused of serving as couriers for the terrorist organization and managing the escape of ETA members. The three, structured under the name of Halboka, were released this December after paying bail.

According to El País, Escudero would have had a more active participation in the group of lawyers who served as a nexus between the prisons and the ETA Halboka leadership. Escudero is considered, according to the order of Judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska who sent the three lawyers to prison, as one of the most significant people who appear in the "organic communication" of Halboka.

This is the third blow to the ETA breeding ground in just over a year, in which around fifty young people linked to the Segi youth organization have already been arrested.
