Ástrid Pérez does not close the door to continuing to preside over the PP of Lanzarote: "Many colleagues encourage me"

The president of the Popular Party of Lanzarote, Ástrid Pérez, does not close the door to running for re-election if the Insular Congress is convened. The political representative intervened this week on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero and assured that although it is still a decision she must think about "seriously", "many party colleagues" encourage her to be a candidate again. 

"I don't know when the Insular Congress of the Popular Party of Lanzarote and La Graciosa will be convened, I have no idea," stated Pérez, who assured that she will not seriously consider the decision until the PP of Canarias convenes it.

María Jesús Tovar, a possible replacement

These statements come weeks after her party colleague and current insular secretary of the PP, María Jesús Tovar, assured that she could run for President, only if Ástrid Pérez did not run. 

Given the possibility of being replaced by María Jesús Tovar, Pérez recalled that in the last Congress she obtained the support of 434 colleagues, compared to the 45 votes of the alternative list. "There are a lot of colleagues who are not public officials, but they do vote, affiliates, sympathizers, who tell me: 'No, don't even think about not running, come on, move forward'," she indicated.

Apart from the Insular Congress, the president of the PP indicated that her mind is now more focused on "planning the electoral structures" because they will be "very tough elections". "The polls are going well for us, we are very happy, but this has to be fought hard," she continued.

The internal battle with Jacobo Medina and Yonathan de León

Last March, Ástrid Pérez dismissed Jacobo Medina as secretary general of the PP in Lanzarote, after having taken away the Vice-presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote from him in January. Regarding whether the rifts within the party have been resolved, Pérez stressed that "someone will have to think about the collective and the interests of the party, because if we all thought about our political careers, it would be difficult". "I imagine there will be decisions that haven't been liked. I guarantee you that there are decisions made that I don't like either," she continued.

Regarding the future of Yonathan de León and his possibility of running as the head of the list for the Mayoralty of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez assured that "we have no one guaranteed for anything" and that in politics "today you are up, tomorrow you are down, you are up again". "You have to know how to win, you have to know how to stay up and you have to know how to stay down, because this is very difficult too," insisted the popular president. "It's like in football and everywhere else, there are people who don't know how to win and there are people who don't know how to lose."

At the same time, regarding the incorporation of the former councilor of Vox in Teguise, who has joined the PP, Pérez explained that from the Popular Party of Lanzarote they are "delighted in short, we want to be more and more", while she assured that Armando Santana, who is not currently affiliated with any political group, has not yet joined the PP. "I am delighted to sit down with whoever wants to join the Popular Party, and I make a general call," she highlighted.

The lawsuit by Coalición Canaria against Dolores Corujo

"We are serious and responsible people and we are not going to vote for what we do not know," stressed Pérez regarding the Popular Party's decision to support in the Governing Council the initiative that delegated to Oswaldo Betancort the possibility of suing councilor Dolores Corujo.

Furthermore, Pérez questioned Oswaldo Betancort's decision to bring this initiative to the Governing Council. "It's very easy, if there is a legal report from the Cabildo that says that this attitude may be allegedly criminal, it's very easy: the president has all the legal tools and legitimacy and capacity to file, if he considers it, a complaint before whomever he deems appropriate," she added. "That is to say, there are instruments, it is not necessary for it to be approved in the Governing Council," she added.
