The Arrecife City Council will transfer land in the Maneje neighborhood to the Government of the Canary Islands for the construction of public housing, which will be used for people without resources and those who can afford to pay for a home but cannot find one for rent. This was announced by the City Council during the meeting held this Wednesday with the Government of the Canary Islands and the island councils of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, in which the capital's City Council also participated.

"Although our powers in Housing are very limited, it is a priority of the Government group to contribute to alleviating the shortage of flats, which no longer only affects people with few means but also many others with healthy economies", said the mayoress of Arrecife, Eva de Anta. In her opinion, and in parallel, "we must advance in the regulation of the holiday rental formula, the main cause of this situation, whose increase generates dysfunctions in the residential offer".

For his part, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Samuel Martín, has also expressed his concern about the shortage of rental housing in the municipality and has stressed that another of the options that have been put on the table has been the purchase, by the Government of the Canary Islands, of those empty homes that exist in Arrecife.

"This alternative would be much faster to alleviate the problem that exists at the moment, and cover the needs of those people who cannot wait for the planned homes to be built in Maneje", explained Martín.

The commitment was reached this morning during a meeting held at the first institution in which the mayoress of Arrecife, Eva de Anta, and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Samuel Martín, discussed the need to expand the number of homes on the island with the general director of the Canarian Housing Institute, Pino de León; the manager of the public company for the promotion of protected housing in the Canary Islands (Visocan), Víctor González, and the presidents of the Island Councils of this eastern axis, Pedro San Ginés and Marcial Morales.

The councilors of Social Welfare of both island councils, Juan Manuel Sosa and Rosa Delia Rodríguez, among others, also participated in this meeting.
