The Housing Department of the Arrecife City Council has announced that it will re-advertise the tender for the rehabilitation of two homes on Timbayba street, in the Titerroy neighborhood, after no companies submitted bids, and that it will add another three properties.
Specifically, the area had put out to tender the **demolition and reconstruction of the dwelling** located at **number 40**, where a 38-year-old man died in 2009 after the **roof of the room he was in collapsed**, and the rehabilitation of the house located at number 34
The announcement of this tender came sixteen years after that young man lost his life in the same home where his mother and cousin were, who did not die because the roof of the rooms they were in did not collapse.
As a result of the incident, up to seven homes were temporarily evacuated, but the situation ended up becoming chronic and some of the residents have died without being able to return to their homes. Among them, Titerroy resident Candelaria Díaz, mother of the young man who lost his life in that collapse, who passed away last August 2025 without returning to her home. This first tender was declared void due to a lack of candidate companies. The initial tender offered 220,000 euros to the awarded company to carry out the work in both homes.
To try to get some company to take on these rehabilitations, the Housing Minister, Rosmen Quevedo, explained to the microphones of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that they are going to unify two budget items to offer a larger sum.
Quevedo reported on the morning show Buenos días, Lanzarote that the Canary Islands Government had allocated another 350,000 euros for the rehabilitation of five more homes on this same street. Of the five homes planned, two owners renounced the rehabilitation, and the Arrecife City Council has asked the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI) to maintain the same budget despite the renunciation of these owners in order to redistribute it among the remaining properties.
The Housing councilor explained that they will put out to tender the renovation of four homes, including number 34, plus the demolition and reconstruction of the one located at number 40. The objective of combining all interventions into a single one is to make "a more attractive tender." In total, this new tender would be allocated 570,000 euros.
"We tried by every means possible to get a company to take it, but that wasn't the case. So now what we're trying to do is make a slightly more attractive proposal, to see if we're lucky and can get these five homes built," the councilman highlighted.
Rosmen Quevedo has announced that the tender has already been commissioned to the Procurement department and that, "shortly," it will be put out to tender because "all the specifications have already been drafted." Thus, he indicated that some residents have informed the council that some homes have suffered attempted squatting.
Meanwhile, the Titerroy Neighborhood Association has denounced the City Council's lack of response to their requests for information to find out the status of the process.
