The Arrecife City Council has announced that the capital's Carnival will be postponed for three weeks, due to the current health situation. In this way, it will be held from March 11 to 23, since it was initially scheduled to be held between February 18 and March 2.
The decision was adopted on Friday morning after a meeting between the mayor, Astrid Pérez, the Councilor for Festivities, Encarna Páez, and technicians from the area, taking into account that Lanzarote is in phase 3 of health alert and given the data on infections that are occurring on the island due to the sixth wave of the ómicron variant.
“We want to be cautious about the health situation and that is why it has been decided, with the corresponding technical advice, to delay the start of the Carnival, but we initially maintain all the events planned in this year's program”, according to Mayor Astrid Pérez.
From the City Council they remember that the theme of the Arrecife Carnival is cinema, and the intention of the Consistory is to maintain the planned program of events with all kinds of events such as the Day Carnival, the different exhibitions, contests and those aimed at children and families.
"We are working anticipating a scenario like the one we are unfortunately in, considering all the options, adjusting and studying the calendar, looking for the formula that allows us, in case there is no risk to health, to celebrate a Carnival as complete as possible", said the Councilor for Festivities, Encarna Páez.
