Arrecife has become "a pioneer in the Canary Islands" by having air quality meters on its beaches. This is assured by the City Council, which has deployed a sensor station on El Reducto beach, the main and most extensive one, to find out the levels of ozone, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in the environment, among others.

In this way, the City Council states that El Reducto beach becomes the first cove in the Canary Islands to have these meters, whose data is known in real time, and shared in the Canary Islands and state network of stations to measure air quality.

The Punta de los Vientos area, between the terms of Arrecife and Teguise, has this type of station, as the Endesa facilities are located in this place, for the generation of electricity, and the desalination plants of the Lanzarote Water Consortium. Now, the initiative of the Arrecife City Council will also allow knowing the levels on its main beach.

Place more sensors in other places

In addition, the Councilor for the Environment, Ángela Hernández, has highlighted that after this pilot station in El Reducto, the City Council plans - in view of the results - to place more sensors in other places in Arrecife.

According to the City Council, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is calculated from the data of the different pollutants collected in the measurement stations of the Air Quality Control and Surveillance Network of the Canary Islands. The calculation of the AQI is carried out with respect to Order TEC/351/2019, of March 18, which approves the air quality index.

Likewise, it is highlighted that the air quality index (AQI) is a generic indicator of air quality and allows knowing its effects on health in a certain place. Thanks to this station, on El Reducto beach, it will be possible to publicize the level of pollution existing in this place, "which, given the characteristics of the Arrecife coastline and the absence of industries in its environment, will allow the beach to be promoted as a healthy place due to the high quality of its waters, where El Reducto has been awarded a blue flag, and from now on to disseminate the levels of air quality", it is concluded.
