The Cabildo launches a volunteer action to beautify the green areas next to the San Bartolome cemetery

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Biosphere Reserve Area and in collaboration with the San Bartolomé City Council, has organized another action of the 'Dispersing Awareness' volunteer program, which, on this occasion, consists of gardening the green areas adjacent to the municipal cemetery of San Bartolomé.

María Dolores Corujo, head of the Biosphere Reserve Area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, applauds this initiative because “these volunteer actions create awareness about the use of native species in gardens and promote good environmental practices and the values of collaboration, cooperation and solidarity.”

Likewise, the coordinating team, taking into account the area of action, the surface to be landscaped and the specificities of the species, has estimated as optimal specimens 15 tabaibas (Euphorbia balsamífera), 15 tajinastes (Echium decasnei), 20 lavenders (Lavandula pinnata) and 10 dragon trees (Dracaena draco). However, the number of specimens may vary depending on availability.

The gardening will take place on Saturday, November 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and a maximum of 20 volunteers may participate. Those interested in this activity can register by sending an email to somosbiosfera@cabildodelanzarote.com with their name, surname, ID and date of birth. The conditions could be modified as the island situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic develops.

Volunteering

The Cabildo points out that, since 2016, the Biosphere Reserve office has materialized its commitment to environmental conservation and the promotion of values of cooperation and collaboration through the Volunteer and Citizen Participation Program “Junt@s Somos Biosfera”.

This program seeks the involvement of citizens and the collaboration of municipal public and even private entities, attending to the environmental and social needs of the island, planting "a seed of solidarity and collaboration with the hope that it will germinate in a more just, egalitarian, sustainable and respectful society with the environment."
