The mayor of Arrecife, Manuel Fajardo Feo, and the Councilor for Social Services of the capital's City Council, attended the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Tinguafaya Association on the afternoon of Friday, October 4. An event that also included the presence of the Minister of Social Welfare of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Marciano Acuña, and to which the members and families that make up the group were also present.

In the new facilities, located at Calle Puerto Rico nº8, Tinguafaya will be able to continue offering both children and adults with disabilities from all over the island, a whole series of recreational and sports activities programmed by the Association itself. The only one in Lanzarote that goes far beyond medical needs and also thinks about the right to fun for its members and rest for family members.

For the mayor of Arrecife, Manuel Fajardo: "Collaborating with these associations is the truly important thing about political management". Similarly, the capital's mayor assured those present that as long as he continued to be mayor, "they will continue to have the contribution of the City Council."

And it is that the capital's City Council, through the Social Services Area, is responsible for covering the rental expenses of the premises. "The work that Tinguafaya does is commendable. Medical care is very important, as well as the right to enjoy leisure. That is why they organize different leisure and free time workshops for people with disabilities. All the support they receive is little," said Ascensión Toledo.

The Tinguafaya Association was born almost a decade ago and arises as an initiative of a group of families with children at the Colegio de Nuestra Señora de Los Volcanes. As they say from the Association, "there was a need to find leisure for the children." Today they not only cover those leisure needs but also offer care and training to the families of people with disabilities.

As of today, the group covers the leisure, free time and family respite needs of about twenty people and their families. During the winter months between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., the center is open to participate in radio workshops, crafts, theater, etcetera, which are added to sports activities and guided tours. The schedule changes in the summer months and holiday periods to adapt to the needs of families. Thus, during these periods the center's opening hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Ascensión Toledo also emphasized the importance of volunteering so that associations like Tinguafaya can develop their work, and also pointed out that "it is the fathers, mothers and other family members who, with their demands, achieve recognition and respect for the rights of this group, these facilities and the activities that will be carried out in them."
