The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Jerónimo Saavedra, was scheduled to present this Thursday at a press conference the performance of timple player José Antonio Ramos at the opening ceremony of the Foundational Festivities of the capital scheduled for June 14. The musician, who passed away this Wednesday morning in the capital of Gran Canaria from a heart attack at the age of 39, was going to participate in said presentation.
On the occasion of this performance, Ramos was going to present his latest work entitled 'Very jar'. The news of the passing of the Gran Canaria timple player has caused deep shock throughout the Canary Islands.
According to the biography on his official website, José Antonio Ramos was a Canarian artist who introduced the timple into a completely new acoustic spectrum. His incursions into a multitude of genres (jazz, flamenco, Celtic, symphonic...) caused the admiration of all those who have listened to his work and his new proposals.
JAR, was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) on November 10, 1969; he began his timple studies at the age of 9 with maestro Totoyo Millares, then continued his training at the Higher Conservatory of Music of Las Palmas GC with classical guitar studies, as well as with various sources from the world of jazz and improvisation from which he takes information to continuously apply it to his natural means of expression, which is the timple.
The awarding of the National Folk Music Prize for Young Performers in 1989 in Santiago de Compostela was the trigger for his professional career, which began with the creation of the group TRÍO TIMPLE. As leader of this formation he recorded 2 albums (Más que un sueño and Tanekra) and toured all corners of the Canary Islands. It is worth mentioning in this stage the show he starred in as the central act of Canary Islands Day (1996) called "Timple. The sound of the Canary Islands" inviting some of the most outstanding instrumentalists and singers of the archipelago.
After the Trío Timple stage, JAR began his solo career with intense activity, giving concerts, seminars, conferences... on stages inside and outside the Canary Islands. In this new period JAR presents for the first time in the history of music the first electroacoustic timple, a project conceived by JAR himself and carried out by the luthiers Jesús Machín and Juan Molina.
This stage, which lasts until today, includes four published albums and countless collaborations both on records (which exceed thirty) and in live performances. It is worth mentioning those that took him together with Carlos Nuñez, Kepa Junkera, Pedro Guerra, Rosana, Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, Mestisay, Los Sabandeños, The Chieftains, Bela Fleck, Jorge Pardo, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Javier Krahe, Bau, Mari Carmen Mulet, Taburiente, Javier Ruibal, Pancho Amat, Polo Ortí, José Manuel Ramos, Camarón de Pitita, Andreas Prittwitz ...
Throughout his years as a professional, JAR combined his artistic work of concerts, recordings... with his work as a teacher.
Apart from private classes in his own timple school, the countless courses, conferences and seminars of various durations in many municipalities of the Canary Islands (Las Palmas de GC, Mogán, San Nicolás de Tolentino, Artenara, Telde, Guía, Las Breñas, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Los Llanos...), as well as for various institutions such as the Higher Conservatory of Music of Las Palmas, the University of Las Palmas de GC, are worth mentioning.
