The dust episode that Lanzarote and La Graciosa are experiencing this Monday, together with pollution, is leaving an air quality "unfavorable" in some places, according to data from the Government of the Canary Islands.
This entry of a Saharan air mass has caused the air quality monitoring station on the island located in the Ciudad Deportiva de Arrecife to have recorded this same day values detrimental to the population in general, which have a greater impact on at-risk groups.
At this station, an "unfavorable" level of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been registered due to the presence of suspended dust that mixes with the pollution of the city itself, such as that emitted by traffic.
However, the rest of the stations in Lanzarote located in La Caletas, Costa Teguise, and another in Arrecife are registering "good" or "reasonably good" air quality, both in nitrogen dioxide and in 2.5 and 10 micrometer microparticles.
Despite this, the dust has significantly reduced visibility throughout the island and can affect people's health.
Given this situation, it is recommended that at-risk groups, sensitive individuals, but also the general population reduce all outdoor activities, move them indoors, or postpone them until the air quality is recommendable and breathable.
Therefore, it is recommended that people sensitive to this type of episode - such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular diseases - take the following measures:
-Do not go outside and keep the doors and windows of houses closed.
-Clean dusty surfaces with damp cloths.
-Stay in humid environments and stay hydrated.
-Do not engage in physical exercise outdoors.
-If respiratory symptoms worsen, call 1-1-2.
