The citizen movement against oil explorations off the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura has called a new demonstration in the islands, although this time to show solidarity with the Balearic Islands, which now have the same fight open. The gathering will be this Saturday, February 22, at 12 noon, coinciding with the demonstration called in the Balearic Islands to reject the surveys authorized by the Government of Spain between the Gulf of Valencia and the Balearic Archipelago and to demand a change in the current energy model.

"Two years ago in the Canary Islands we demonstrated with exactly the same arguments that we now share with the citizens of the Balearic Islands," recall from the Canarian citizen movement "No to oil companies, Yes to renewables." "Perhaps at that time we would have liked the entire Spanish population to support us and be by our side, and share the same feeling with us. Perhaps, from the distance and the interested disinformation, this was not possible. Now it is we, the Canarians, who have the possibility of showing solidarity with our equals, from citizens to citizens, from people to people, from islanders to islanders," the group states.

In a statement supported by the Island Commission against Oil Prospecting of Lanzarote, the Canary Islands say No to Oil Companies, Citizen Movement No to Oil Companies-Yes to Renewables of Fuerteventura and Ben Magec, they point out that "far from the interests and profits of a private sector that does not attend to the common good, the citizens of both Archipelagos feel that we are united by the commitment to conserve the spaces that make us unique and that are part of our island idiosyncrasy."

In this sense, they insist that "we share the same concern for the environment we inhabit. We share the need to promote sustainable economic and energy development, without harming future generations. We share the right to be heard when it comes to deciding on our future. We believe that unity and solidarity are essential to strengthen our voice against those who, for particular interests, try to differentiate our realities," and they defend that "the union between the citizens of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands will make us strong, brave and committed."

For this reason, they make "a call to all, groups, organizations, institutions and citizens sensitive to the situation that threatens the two archipelagos to come and join the gathering" that will take place this Saturday, February 22, at 12 noon, on Real Street in Arrecife, in front of the old Cabildo.
