The association argues that while "Lanzarote was a pioneer in desalinating water 63 years ago with the same technique, there are currently more modern and less harmful techniques for the seabed"

The association of fishermen of La Santa "Piedra de La Salta" have issued a statement to speak out against the emissary that is planned to be installed on the coast of the coastal town.

From the association they point out that the information about the discharge of brine through the emissary has reached them through the "surfers who held a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of the City Council of Tinajo".

The fishermen argue that while "Lanzarote was a pioneer in desalinating water 63 years ago with the same technique, there are currently more modern and less harmful techniques for the seabed."

"We are clear that the idea of installing a desalination plant is very important and beneficial for the primary sector of the island, as water is scarce for farmers, but we demand that they protect our fishing grounds as brine damages the barley fields where fish, shellfish, cephalopods and other marine species that are vital to the economy of fishermen breed", they point out from the association.

Therefore, the fishermen want to express their "discomfort" with the "City Council, Cabildo and Government of the Canary Islands" because they criticize that "to this day they have not communicated with the fishermen and residents of La Santa to present the project and the consequences of its execution."

"The BOE publishes with entry date this desalination plant on February 27, 2019. We do not understand how the mayor of our municipality has allowed negotiations with the marine environment of La Santa", conclude from the Association of Fishermen of La Santa "Piedra de La Salta".
