The Cabildo will rehabilitate the Nuevo Santa Teresa tuna boat, which was beginning to sink in Puerto Naos

"It is a memory of our fishermen, an essential part of the history of an island and a way of life closely linked to the sea, which we cannot afford to let die," says the president.

The Nuevo Santa Teresa tuna boat has been stranded this Tuesday in Marina Lanzarote after having to be rescued after having listed to port due to the water leaks it presented in the hull.

The boat, the first of its kind to arrive on the island, had been moored in Puerto Naos for almost two decades. During this time, it has suffered various problems in the carpentry, aggravated in the hull, which have led it to face several repairs, the last one in 2017.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, regrets "the abandonment" to which the island's heritage has been subjected "due to inaction, ignorance or lack of will and ideas", and announces that the First Institution of the island will now undertake a comprehensive rehabilitation project of the Nuevo Santa Teresa, "which is a memory of our fishermen, an essential part of the history of an island and a way of life closely linked to the sea, which we cannot afford to let die."

In this same line, the Councilor for Fisheries, Ángel Vázquez, stated, who valued the recovery of this tuna boat "very positively" "as a tribute to the fishermen and so that it serves, as a living memory, so that the new generations know a very important part of the history of Lanzarote, linked forever to the sea, to the history of many men and women who have dedicated their entire lives to fishing."

The Nuevo Santa Teresa was transferred to the Cabildo of Lanzarote for scientific-cultural purposes in 2003. Since then, it has remained moored in Puerto Naos waiting for a final use, having to be repaired on several occasions.
