Lanzarote exceeded the 95,500 tons of garbage that ended up in the Zonzamas Environmental Complex throughout 2025, almost 2% more than in the previous year. This is confirmed by the data published in the report of Lanzarote en Cifras from the Data Center.
Although the waste generated on the island has not stopped growing since 2022, after the halt of the tourism sector due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, it has not yet reached pre-pandemic figures. In 2019, this same report recorded that the island reached 107,707 tons of trash, 12.9% more than currently.
By municipalities, the one that contributes most to the increase in waste is Arrecife, the island's capital and most populated city, which generates 25.5% of the total waste. The island capital is closely followed by the tourist municipality of Yaiza, which contributes 22% of the total waste. Despite being the third least populated, it is one of Lanzarote's main tourist centers.
After Yaiza, the town of Tías, another of the island's tourist centers, causes 20% of the waste that ends up in Zonzamas. Tías has about 3,000 fewer inhabitants than Yaiza.
Teguise, the second municipality in population, is the fourth in waste generation, 16.24% of the total. Meanwhile, San Bartolomé causes 8.9% of the island's trash; Haría, 3.24%; and Tinajo, the one that least, with 3.19%.
