The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Digital Memory of Lanzarote, developed by the Data Center, on the occasion of the arrival of the 2010 Carnival, undertakes the collection of photos on the theme of the 20th century Carnival, "in order to enrich the project that today offers the largest digital documentation service on the history of Lanzarote".

To this end, it requests the participation of all those who preserve, in paper, negative or digital format, photos from any decade of the 20th century, including earlier ones if they have them. In the case of photographs in paper or negative, the original material received "will be returned to its owner once digitized, who will also be given a free copy in digital format as a gesture for having collaborated in the project of documenting the photographic history of Lanzarote".

Through the website [www.memoriadelanzarote.com->www.memoriadelanzarote.com], the donated photographs can be viewed and even "offer an assessment of them by users", who will estimate as a ranking which images best reflect the Carnival festival in Lanzarote.

Digital Memory reaches 5,051 records

The Digital Memory of Lanzarote project, "born in May 2007 as a public digital documentation service, has been growing and today has a total of 5,051 records", including images, documents, chronologies and statistics.

Through a daily work of digitization, documentary emptying and metadata management, after analysis and treatment of historical documentation, [www.memoriadelanzarote.com->www.memoriadelanzarote.com] "has been increasing its contents on documentary, historical, cultural and scientific heritage produced in or about the island, with the aim of contributing to its research and public knowledge".

The initiative is currently a digital bank with 2,153 images, 1,518 chronologies, 1,021 statistics and 359 documents. The collection will continue to grow every day, and will soon house new information formats such as audio and video documents.

The largest documentary source on the Island

Digital Memory of Lanzarote aims to become "the largest documentary source on the island in the digital spectrum. To this end, it has the collaboration of other public and private institutions, as well as the disinterested contribution of the citizens of Lanzarote".

The development of Digital Memory of Lanzarote "is being possible thanks to the support of organizations and people who collaborate in different ways" and who, in many cases, transfer private material so that through its digitization, all citizens can access knowledge of it.
