The men who helped save the lives of 28 people after the shipwreck of a boat off the coast of Lanzarote, dubbed "the heroes of Órzola", were received this Wednesday at the Cabildo to recognize their work. During the event, the president, María Dolores Corujo, highlighted "the courage and humanity" that these eight residents demonstrated on November 24, when a boat collided with the breakwater of the dock and the migrants fell into the water. Eight were rescued lifeless but the rapid intervention of these residents, who were later joined by the emergency services, made it possible to save 28.
"They did not hesitate to jump into the water in the dark, putting their lives in danger to save the lives of others," they emphasize from the Cabildo, which recalls that after the event they had to remain isolated due to the protocol against Covid-19.
“I want to express the sincere gratitude, respect and deep admiration of the entire island of Lanzarote in one of the saddest and most difficult moments experienced in recent times,” said the president, who was accompanied by the Security and Emergencies Councilor, Francisco Javier Aparicio, and the manager of the Consortium, Enrique Espinosa. "They are already part of the most beautiful history of our land; there are no words to describe what they have done,” added Corujo.
“We would do it again without thinking, for anyone. When human lives are at stake, there is no other option,” said the spokesman for the residents who participated in the rescue. Marcos Rubén Lemes, Marcial Armas, Iván Curbelo, Marcial Curbelo, Jessey Ramírez, Juan Jesús de León, Armando Tabio, Ignacio Fontes and Aithami Reyes were present at the Cabildo reception. Miguel Renda is added to them, who could not attend the recognition ceremony.
