The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa informs that it is working on the search for new strategies that allow strengthening the relationship between tourist activity and the island's commercial fabric. With this objective, the Minister of Commerce and Consumption, Armando Santana, has recently maintained an intense work agenda in Malaga with representatives from different areas of the tourism and business sector.

The meetings held with the Association of Hoteliers of Malaga (MAHOS), the Association of Hoteliers of the Costa del Sol (AEHCOS), Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol, and the Chamber of Commerce of Malaga have made it possible to learn first-hand about initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration between hotels, restaurants, administrations, and commercial companies.

During the meetings, issues such as the creation of gastronomic routes linked to local products, the generation of alliances between tourist establishments and shops, the digitalization of markets and small businesses, as well as the use of tools and data that allow for a more precise understanding of visitor consumption habits have been addressed.

For the Minister of Commerce and Consumption, Armando Santana, “Lanzarote has a huge opportunity to make tourist activity generate even more value within our own economy. We have to ensure that tourism is also an opportunity for our merchants. It is not only about attracting visitors, but about getting them to know our products, our markets, our gastronomy, and our shops, and for that spending to be distributed throughout our local economy,” points out the minister.

Santana highlights that “the experience of Malaga shows that collaboration between different sectors can open new avenues for better distributing the economic impact of tourism. Our objective is to study these experiences with a practical approach and determine which ones can work in Lanzarote, taking into account the characteristics and needs of our business fabric.”

In this regard, the counselor considers it fundamental to “facilitate hotels, restaurants, and businesses to get to know each other, collaborate, and generate joint proposals that benefit the entire island economy”. “We cannot understand tourism and commerce as two separate realities. They are sectors that need each other and, by working in a coordinated manner, can offer the visitor a more complete experience and, at the same time, generate new opportunities for our companies,” he adds.

As a result of this work agenda, the participating entities have agreed to move forward with the organization of a meeting in Lanzarote at the end of this year. The initiative will allow some of the experiences developed in Malaga and the Costa del Sol to be brought closer to the business and commercial fabric of the island, in addition to studying new possibilities for cooperation and knowledge transfer.

The counselor emphasizes that “digital transformation, knowledge of consumption habits, and the creation of products that connect our gastronomy, our commerce, and our tourist offer are lines of work that we must continue to explore”. “The ultimate goal is very clear: that Lanzarote's tourism success has an ever-greater capacity to generate activity, employment, and wealth in our shops and businesses,” concludes Armando Santana.
