Arrecife became this Thursday the place designated by the Armed Forces to pay tribute to the people who died in the Canary Islands and throughout the Spanish territory.
The capital's mayor, Astrid Pérez, participated in the lowering of the flag of Spain, escorted by an honor picket from the Military Barracks of Lanzarote, at its headquarters in Arrecife. This tribute, with the presence of civil and military authorities, took place at 7:30 p.m. on the esplanade of the Castle of San Gabriel, in Arrecife.
This simultaneous flag lowering was also held, in addition to the capital of Lanzarote, in Arico (Tenerife), Gáldar (Gran Canaria), Pájara (Fuerteventura), Santa Cruz de La Palma, San Sebastián de La Gomera and Valverde (El Hierro).
The lieutenant general head of the Canary Islands Command, Carlos Palacios, presided over the event held in Arico, Tenerife, where he was accompanied by different civil authorities and the sub-delegate of the Government in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Jesús Plata.
Among the authorities present in Arrecife were the mayor, the popular Astrid Pérez, who accompanied the commanders of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Civil Guard, and the Chief Commissioner of the National Police in Arrecife in this tribute. On behalf of the Arrecife City Council, the councilors of the Government group, Tomás Fajardo, and Elisabet Merino Betancort, participated. On behalf of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the councilor Marcos Bergaz attended.
"Our Armed Forces have been, and continue to be by our side together with the entire conejera, Canarian and Spanish society to combat covid 19," said Mayor Astrid Pérez. "A recognition that yesterday afternoon received, in their memory, the more than 28,000 people who have lost their lives with covid in Spain."
The mayor has highlighted the presence of the UME- Military Emergency Unit of the Armed Forces, in Lanzarote participating in the tasks of disinfection of sensitive areas, such as hospitals or residences where seniors are housed.
