A group of activists belonging to the Canary Islands Human Rights Association held a demonstration this Tuesday in front of the Insular Directorate of the State Administration in Lanzarote, demanding an "end to the degrading and inhuman treatment" of immigrants staying in what they consider the "ship of shame", in San Bartolomé.

The conditions of that ship were made public two weeks ago, when a video was released reflecting the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, in an enclosure with mattresses and mats thrown on the floor and without showers. The APDHC assures that this situation "violates the postulates contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the obligation to exercise correct humanitarian assistance towards these people".

During the concentration, the association also protested against "the massive deaths, registered and anonymous", that are occurring in the Canary Islands waters of migrant people fleeing from "man, hunger and horror and in search of a better life".

"How do we educate in Peace, with the pandemic of hatred? How do we educate in peace when the streets, neighborhoods and cities are filled with stinging comments, of hoaxes, slanders, of those who invite others to board the ship of intolerance? How to educate in peace if we have here nearby, among us, the fundamentalists and intransigents of Europe, those who revive the fascism of the extreme right?", they question in a manifesto that they read before the Insular Delegation of the Government.

The Canary Islands Human Rights Association urges the island authorities to "seek a more dignified solution for migrants and refugees."
