The Padre Claret de Altavista Neighborhood Association has shown its opposition to the change of name of the Mercedes Medina educational center, which it considers an "unfortunate decision."

"We do not accept this change of name under any circumstances," the neighborhood group points out in a letter addressed to the mayor of Arrecife, Ástrid Pérez, before the proposal from the school board of the center was submitted to the plenary session last Friday for the center to be renamed IES in Altavista.

This proposal, she explains, was previously taken "to a commission by the councilor for education, who in turn is part of the aforementioned council" of the center.

"The name of Dña. Mercedes Medina is part of the history of our neighborhood and of thousands of boys and girls who have studied and trained in it. This center has received numerous recognitions for its brilliant educational, social and cultural trajectory. Dña. Mercedes Medina has a brilliant personal and teaching record. There is no ethical, moral or political reason in her biography that links her to any punishable or despicable act," she states in her writing.

Thus, she rejects the change of name of the center - "We know that the council is empowered to do so based on current regulations, but this association will ensure the intangible heritage of our neighborhood," warns the group, which asks that the "serious error" be compensated.
