Retired National Police agent José Luis Padrón, alias "Chicha", has died at the age of 73, recently turned, after suffering a long illness.

Born in Chicharrero, José Luis moved with his wife María del Carmen Ligero and their five daughters from Tenerife to Lanzarote, specifically to the city of Arrecife, in 1979. "For his work he was the best, very good, very well known, he liked things done well, he knew everyone. Even retired, his colleagues called him to ask him things, he had a great photographic memory and remembered streets and names of everyone," recalls his wife María del Carmen from Barcelona.

"Chicha" retired at the age of 65, eight years ago. His hobby was going fishing on his boat, according to one of his daughters, Beatriz Padrón. He also liked to play petanque and dominoes.

José Luis Padrón fell ill with cancer up to three times. "Three times he has defeated it and returned," says his wife afflicted. Because of the illness and as one of his daughters lived in Barcelona, he decided to move there a year ago to be treated by the city's doctors. "He knew a very good doctor," says María del Carmen.

"When he returned to Lanzarote after chemotherapy or radiotherapy and had strength, he would go to see his friends or to the police station to see his colleagues," say his wife and daughter.

José Luis Padrón was "the pillar of the house" for his family. "The eyes, feet and hands of my mother who is sick," adds his daughter Beatriz. "He has several grandchildren, one of them has grown up at home like the son he never had."
