The Guardamar Polimnia has rescued a dinghy about 90 kilometers northeast of Lanzarote, which has been spotted by a merchant ship en route, with an as yet undetermined number of people on board.
According to reports from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, there were 55 people of sub-Saharan origin on board, apparently in good health, including 10 women and 7 minors. In addition, one of the women has been transferred to the Molina Orosa hospital.
The boat was spotted at around 8.05 am by the Maersk Roubaix, a 148-meter-long container ship that remains alongside it, waiting for the rescue ship to arrive, a Maritime Rescue spokesman told Efe.
The crew of the freighter have informed the authorities that the dinghy was sailing when they found it, although with an erratic trajectory that makes them think they had lost their way.
