The town of Las Breñas enjoyed in a single night the essence of Canarian folklore and the prolific Latin American music in the seventh edition of the Víctor Fernández Gopar Encounter that was the start of the festivities in honor of San Luis Gonzaga this Friday. Jóvenes Cantadores from Tenerife and the host Parranda Janubio undertook a musical journey through the Canary Islands, alternating their interpretation of isas, folías, malagueñas and seguidillas with Latin American themes that the world already feels as their own.
Music and poetry, with the living memory of the verses of Víctor Fernández Gopar 'El Salinero', were felt in the square that adopted the name of the popular poet of Las Breñas. There, and before a crowded tent, first the Parranda Janubio went up to play and sing mainly traditional Canarian music.
With 32 years of experience, the group led by Clotildo Martín confirms its commitment to new generations, giving prominence to children and young singers and players trained in its quarry who share the stage with members of the parranda as seasoned in folklore as Elena Acosta, Domingo Machín, Leonardo Cabrera or Clotildo Martín himself.
One of the youngest members of Janubio, Fabio Cabrera, together with two equally teenage guests, Javier Padrón and Ancor Zaida, adorned the serenade of homage to the figure of 'El Salinero' singing several of his verses. For Janubio, it is also almost essential to perform 'El escarabajo' in each performance, its particular journey through the municipality of Yaiza in the form of music that was also present this Friday.
The Víctor Fernández Gopar 2018 Encounter also featured one of the most important groups of Canarian popular music that celebrates its first 10 years of activity with a renewed show and image in which it has added 513 concerts. Now, eight soloists occupy the front line of the stage.
The most recognizable figures of Jóvenes Cantadores de Tenerife are Darío Cabrera, its director, who sings and plays the timple, and the soloist Elvis Sanfiel, however, the greatness of the group is made by the group of more than twenty boys and girls who left their mark of quality in Las Breñas.
Jóvenes Cantadores went from folías, isa majorera and malagueñas to also impeccably perform essential themes from other cultures such as 'La gota fría', authored by the Colombian juglar Rafael Escalona. The Tenerife group also jumped to Venezuela to play llanera music, performed Mexican music, caressed the verses of the Argentine poet and composer Alberto Cortez and even dared with 'Colors in the Wind' from the Disney movie 'Pocahontas'.
Las Breñas experienced a wonderful night of good music that ended with the delivery of copies of the book sponsored by the Yaiza City Council that publishes the verses of Víctor Fernández Gopar. Representatives of the two groups participating in the Folklore Encounter received the books from the councilors of Festivities of Yaiza, Javier Camacho, and of Culture, Daniel Medina. The town continues with festivities until Thursday, June 21.
