Lanzarote said its last goodbye to the former president of Spain, Adolfo Suárez, who died last Sunday. The church of San Ginés celebrated a mass at 7:30 p.m., in which the parish priest, Miguel Hernández, highlighted Suárez's Christian character, a man who participated in the Eucharist almost daily. In addition, he pointed out that after his death he should serve as an example of harmony, as Lorenzo Lemaur explained to La Voz.
The funeral in memory of Suárez began at 7:30 p.m. and, in addition to residents of the island, many people who were once part of the UCD or the CDS also attended. Among those attending were Jesús Morales, who was general secretary of the CDS in the Canary Islands; Marcial Francisco Hernández, who was island president and regional deputy for this party; Antonio Lorenzo, at the time president of the Cabildo with the UCD and Juan Manuel de León, the last president of the CDS in Lanzarote.
Also participating in this tribute to Suárez were Julio Romero, vice president of the Cabildo for the CDS, Honorio García Bravo, Pancho San Ginés, who was a councilor of the Cabildo, Rafael Silva, island secretary of this party in Lanzarote and Demesio González, from the Marcial supermarket family, who was an active member of the CDS.
The PP councilor in Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, and Tomás Borges, who was the person who gave Lorenzo Lemaur the idea of organizing and celebrating this mass in honor of Suárez, also attended the funeral. Precisely, Lemaur entered politics with the CDS in 1987.
