The Cabildo of Lanzarote has promoted the project Friendly Cities, Health and Care, with the aim of promoting "healthy and conscious walks" for students of intermediate, higher and professional training cycles of the Island.

From November 7 to 29, several schools have collaborated in this initiative whose objective is to raise awareness among students and teachers of the importance for health of going to class walking or by bicycle.

The Councilor of the Road Education Service, Aroa Revelo, also highlighted that another of the purposes of the initiative focuses on actively involving students in the knowledge of the environment and the creation of friendlier and more inclusive neighborhoods and cities.

“The proposal consisted of a walk through the surroundings of the center, paying attention to the needs of the place in addition to enjoying the walk; after the walking route, later, in the classroom, a dynamic participatory workshop takes place, where the students identify the problems and needs detected in the walk, as well as, in their day to day to get to the center, through conversation and consensus”, according to the councilor.

From this identification, the students themselves are in charge of proposing solutions for these needs, in order to promote the necessary spaces to expand the public space for active, healthy and inclusive travel and to co-transform existing infrastructures, designed mainly for cars, into infrastructures for people's daily and proximity itineraries, on foot or by bicycle.
