Various institutions in Lanzarote observed a minute of silence this Monday on the occasion of the International Day against Gender Violence and expressed their rejection of the new murder of a 26-year-old girl that occurred this Monday in Tenerife.
"More than fifty women have died this year from gender violence. We must go out and demonstrate and say enough is enough to a scourge that is attacked with education and solidarity," said the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, at the rejection event held at the first island institution.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote has encouraged people to join the concentration that will take place this Monday, at 7:00 p.m., on Calle Real de Arrecife, organized by the Forum against gender violence in Lanzarote. The demonstration will start from the Four Corners to the Casa Amarilla, where the concentration will take place and a manifesto will be read. During the tour there will be silhouettes painted with chalk representing the victims in the Canary Islands of gender violence.
Acts in Arrecife and Haría
For her part, the mayor of Arrecife, Ástrid Pérez, conveyed on behalf of the entire Corporation condolences to the family of the young woman murdered in Tenerife, after a minute of silence was observed in the plenary session held this Monday. Astrid Pérez is scheduled to participate this afternoon in the events for the International Day against Gender Violence, which will take place on Calle Real.
In Haría, students from the CEIP of San Juan and the IES participated on Monday morning in the reading of a manifesto on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The event, organized by the Area of Social Welfare, Seniors, Equality, Citizen Participation, Health and Housing of the Haría City Council, was attended by the councilor Chaxiraxi Niz Guadalupe, as well as other members of the corporation who participated, together with the young people, in the reading of the manifesto.
The Councilor for Equality, Chaxiraxi Niz Guadalupe, explained that with this event the City Council concludes the program of events held during the weekend to denounce the violence exerted by men against women throughout the world and demand policies in all countries for its eradication. Among the activities held these days, she highlighted the play entitled 'Women' starring seven women from the municipality and directed by Miguel Páez.
