The Canary Islands are suffering the warmest month of August in the last 60 years, with two heat waves included. This was advanced by the climatological advance of the Archipelago prepared by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
In the province of Las Palmas, the average temperature anomaly was 2.4 degrees warmer than usual, reaching 26.3 degrees. In this way, it became an "extremely warm" period. The same happened with the maximum and minimum temperatures. In all cases, this month was the warmest since records began.
In this line, the Lanzarote airport recorded the maximum temperature of the month of August on the 13th, during the first heat wave of the month. At that time it exceeded the 40 degree barrier and red and orange warnings were issued in almost all the municipalities of the island.
In the particular case of Lanzarote, the month of August was extremely warm throughout the island. The two heat waves that affected Lanzarote and the rest of the Archipelago were not only noticeable in the maximum temperatures but in how the minimums did not drop below 20 degrees in many areas of the islands.
All the nights of August were tropical in the tourist town of Playa Blanca and also at the Aemet station located at the César Manrique Airport. In addition, the Aemet station in Tías-Las Vega recorded 12 tropical nights; Haría, 21 nights and Tinajo, a total of 23.
