The Nobel Prize for Literature José Saramago took to the streets on September 27, 2002 to protest against the mass tourism of the island. After nine years of living in Lanzarote, the Portuguese writer stated

 

 

Hundreds of people demonstrated in the year 2000 in favor of the approval of a Residency Law, where posters such as "No to racism! No to xenophobia!" could be read.
