In the Guenia sociocultural center of the town of El Mojón, traditional ceramic workshops are still being taught under the Cultural Plan of the Teguise City Council. The course began in October of last year, ending on the 12th of this month of June.
The classes, taught by the potter Teresa Morales, are held three days a week, attended by a total of about twenty students and, in smaller numbers, some men. The classes are usually very entertaining, where the students follow the entire process from the beginning until they achieve the finish of their ceramic piece. The raw material is clay, which they extract from the top of the Las Nieves mountain for its quality, to which they then add a portion of sandy soil collected from the ravines near the town of El Mojón.
When a painted ceramic piece is desired, the raw material used is a type of soil called almagre, to which another known as tegue is added. Once the piece is finished, it is placed in a kiln to achieve its final finish.
The course attendees highly value not only seeing their ceramic piece finished but also the good atmosphere that is breathed, making it a very positive therapy for the mind. Both the potter Teresa Morales and the Councilor for Culture Olivia Duque, present at the closing ceremony, congratulated the students on their work and encouraged them to continue next year.
