CEIP Benito Méndez Tarajano is among the finalists in a national competition for ecological school gardens and until next Friday, February 11, the deadline is open to support this school in Arrecife, through the link www.mamaterra.info/videos/votación .
The Arrecife City Council has congratulated the center and encouraged citizens to participate in the vote, to support "the great work it has done".
"For us, it is already a source of pride, regardless of the final result of the voting," said the mayor, Astrid Pérez.
The City Council recalls that the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands distinguished nine educational centers last year for the development of ecological gardens in their facilities, among which were two from the capital, CEIP Nieves Toledo and Benito Méndez Tarajano.
"School garden projects are a great success for educational communities, they know they have our support for activities that promote the socialization of schoolchildren with sustainable activities," says the Councilor for Education, Saro González.
CEIP Benito Méndez is competing at the state level, through the action promoted by the Vida Sana Association and the Triodos Foundation, to become "the best primary education center in developing an ecological school garden project".
As explained by the Consistory, in this contest, in which the finalists present a video of their work, "the adaptation of the gardens to the environment and the optimization of resources, with the use of natural fertilizers and sustainable drip irrigation, waste management and the recycling of materials" are valued.
CEIP Benito Méndez has been a finalist along with two other schools nationwide, Escola La Sardana and Escuela Waldorf de Zaragoza, in the Primary category. Benito Méndez has planted several vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuces or carrots, all of them organically, and with the involvement of its students and teachers.
