Council members and employees of the Arrecife City Council observed a minute of silence this Thursday in "repudiation of the murder" of a resident of Titerroy. Araceli died this Wednesday, victim of several stab wounds, allegedly at the hands of a 67-year-old man who had arrived on a visit that same day from Tenerife and who is already in police custody.

The neighborhood association of the deceased has expressed "its solidarity and support" to the family and friends of the victim. The Socialist Party and the Mararía association have also done so, and have also urged citizens to attend the rally of the Forum against Gender Violence that is being held this Thursday in the capital. Labor personnel and public representatives of the Arrecife City Council have gathered at 12 noon in front of the building "in repudiation of the brutal murder."

For its part, the Titerroy Neighborhood Association, the neighborhood where the tragic event took place, has described what happened as "machista murder." The residents of this neighborhood emphasize in their statement that "gender violence is a state problem that affects all citizens" and have urged the Government to "face it with all the instruments at its disposal to put an end to this social scourge."

"Let's reflect on the society we are building"

The Socialist Party of Arrecife has issued a statement in which it says that it "deeply regrets" the death of this neighbor and conveys to her relatives "its deepest condolences." "If the murder is finally confirmed for gender reasons, we will have to reflect once again on the society we are building," says José Montelongo.

If confirmed, "the black list of women killed by sexist aggressions in this year that has barely begun would rise today to five, an inadmissible, shameful figure for a country that supposedly progresses in many other areas," said the local secretary of the PSOE of Arrecife. Montelongo also stressed the need to review "the mechanisms for detecting and preventing these behaviors" that, he says, "we have not been able to develop."

Act of repudiation

The condemnation of the homicide coincides, on the other hand, with the celebration of the Forum against Gender Violence that the Mararía association convenes monthly. Faced with this fact, the socialist councilman has invited "all citizens to join the rally that this forum convenes every first Thursday of the month."

For its part, the association has also emphasized the celebration of this rally, which will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Calle Real de Arrecife, in front of the Cabildo Viejo. Mararía has pointed out that Araceli's death also coincided with "another woman who died at the hands of her partner in the Malaga town of Ronda and the admission of a woman, attacked in Los Gladiolos, in very serious condition to the Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in Tenerife."

Faced with these cases, Mararía emphasizes that "gender violence is not something occasional or foreign to each of us" and, therefore, they make "a call to participate" in the rally under the slogan "If they attack one of us, let's all respond."
