A neighborhood movement in Arrecife has requested the improvement of life in the city through a collection of signatures on the Change.org website. The group points out its wishes regarding the state of the neighborhoods in the capital of Lanzarote.

Under the slogan 'Let's improve life in Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote', citizens have pointed out that "we are tired of seeing the deterioration of our neighborhoods." The group of neighbors demands a "clean city where you can walk and rest" and a "marina without spills", two issues that entail a "habitable public space."

In addition, another of the main reasons for the initiative is to request an "efficient public transport", with greater frequencies and schedules, creation of pedestrian spaces, among other issues. The neighborhood movement demands that there be a "dialoguing" city council with an "extension of hours" of attention in its departments.

A collective initiative that aims to be heard. "Individually we have no capacity for action, we are invisible," they have pointed out in the petition. According to what they have reported through the website with this project "we have the opportunity to have a voice and exert social pressure."

The following are the different issues that citizens "need and have the right to demand":

-A clean city

  • Effective cleaning services that sweep and clean all streets.
  • Clean plots.
  • Trash cans in strategic points of all neighborhoods
  • Accessible and clean recycling containers (plastic, cardboard, glass, waste, oil)
  • A mobile Clean Point
  • Proportional sanctions for individuals and companies that litter or make unauthorized discharges.
  • An adequate sewage and water purification network that prevents floods and burst sewers.

-Rest

  • Noise ban from 00:00 to 8:00. Any activity that is organized in the public space must be compatible with the rest of the residents and must not exceed the maximum level of decibels set by the municipal ordinance.
  • Prohibition of quads and vehicles with altered exhausts.

-A public space to enjoy

  • Shaded areas created with ephemeral and economical solutions.
  • Opening of the municipal kiosks that remain closed and in poor condition
  • Sidewalks wide enough for two people to walk together and a wheelchair.
  • Well-located street furniture, installation of tables for chess/dominoes/table games, basketball hoops, gym equipment in all neighborhoods
  • Safe playgrounds with shade
  • Well-maintained parks, gardens and green areas
  • Elimination of architectural barriers
  • Opening of public bathrooms
  • Ethical and aesthetic use of public space when events are held

-Mobility: efficient public transport

  • Real improvement of urban transport in Arrecife and interurban transport: greater frequency and schedules, effective information
  • Signage of poorly visible pedestrian crossings in areas of high traffic density
  • Restriction of the use of motor vehicles on days of haze
  • Creation of pedestrian spaces, always offering alternatives to mobility
  • Development of bike lanes that connect the neighborhoods
  • Fleet of hybrid or electric institutional vehicles

-Culture and living socio-cultural centers

  • Maintenance of the socio-cultural centers of all neighborhoods and a weekly program of activities agreed with the neighborhood
  • Opening of exhibition halls and public cultural spaces on weekends
  • Accessible culture on weekends. It is not possible for the life of the city to be governed solely by the schedules of cruise tourists.
  • Special involvement with adolescents and young people: listen to them, let them have a voice, give them cultural alternatives.

-Use and protection of the marina

  • End spills in the Arrecife marina.
  • Value the maritime and fishing heritage of the city.
  • Dissemination of the environmental values of the marina (marine fauna, birds...).
  • Recovery of the coastal boat built by the Pancho Lasso Art School
  • Opening to bathing of the pools and socos of the Islote de Fermina
  • Adequacy of the steps of the Parque Islas Canarias that lead to the sea and the breakwater of El Reducto

-Community crops

  • Community gardens and gardens of native flora in unused or abandoned plots
  • Recovery of the Arrecife sand for agricultural use

-Heritage parks

  • Creation of public parks in areas of cultural interest (salt flats, ancient lavas, sites)
  • Maintenance and repair of public monuments (such as the Puente de las Bolas and the new promenade)

-A dialoguing City Council, participatory budgets

  • Creation of jobs in the public company to have effective services
  • Extension of the hours of attention of the different departments of the Arrecife City Council
  • Participatory budgets that make public consultation of the major issues of interest

Signatures to seek a change in the city of Arrecife can be made through the Change.org website.
