Security forces in Morocco have managed to arrest 22 sub-Saharan immigrants in the Western Sahara who wanted to reach the coasts of the Canary Islands, as reported this Tuesday by the delegation of the Ministry of the Interior in the city of Al Aaíun.

The statement emphasizes that the patrols of the gendarmerie in charge of fighting illegal immigration managed to arrest the 22 sub-Saharans 10 km from the city of Al Aaiún when they were trying to find pateras skippers to take them to the coasts of the Canary Islands.

This is the second time that the gendarmerie has managed to arrest sub-Saharans in January who had the objective of immigrating to the Archipelago, since on January 14, 30 immigrants were arrested, also in the province of Al Aaiún.

On the other hand, the Ministry of the Interior reported that a total of 20 foreign passengers in possession of false documents have been arrested this January by the police at the Mohammed V international airport in Casablanca.

The twenty travelers, arrested in control operations when they were preparing to board, are mostly of sub-Saharan origin, another fourteen foreign passengers, who were trying to enter Morocco illegally, have been arrested in the same period, the same source adds. Meanwhile, twelve Moroccans, candidates for illegal immigration to Europe, have also been arrested since the beginning of 2008, in possession of forged passports, visas or residence cards.
