A pair of ruddy shelducks (Tadorna ferruginea) and their young were seen walking this Wednesday in the La Degollada area, in the south of the island, as can be seen in a video sent by a reader to La Voz.

It is about a species of anatid (family of geese, ducks, and swans) present in many areas although in the Canary Islands its population is declared as wild. According to SEO/Bird, in the recent past it was a relatively common species as a winter visitor in the marshes of the Guadalquivir.

It extends mainly in the southern area of Spain and its presence in many parts of the country is due to escaped specimens from captivity or intentional releases.

The Canada goose has a medium size and goose-like appearance, with rather long neck and legs and long, narrow wings. Females and males are similar and have an orange-brown body color, with a paler, cream-colored head. In addition, it is a rather noisy bird.

It is a species that frequents wetlands of various types, especially those that allow it to graze on the edges. Likewise, they feed in alfalfa crops and cereal fields.

Their breeding season is from April to August and for this reason this couple has been seen with their offspring.
