Elyoenai Aparicio, a freediver from Lanzarote, managed to capture a deep-sea octopus off the coast of the island on Monday afternoon. This cephalopod is known as the blanket octopus (Tremoctopus violaceus) due to the large membranes that females have and that they can deploy from two of their arms, probably to appear larger or even detach from it as a defense system.
In addition, these species have an extreme degree of sexual dimorphism, females can reach two meters, while the smallest males are only a few centimeters.
According to Aparicio, "on this occasion it is a female specimen due to its large size and was probably stunned by the presence of dolphins in the area", as can be seen in the video published on his Instagram profile.
The sighting of this species is very rare, since, like the devil fish, but unlike this one, they can be seen from the surface to 250 meters deep.
