The new multipurpose ocean vessel of the Civil Guard “Duque de Ahumada”, will make several technical stops in two Ports of the province of Las Palmas: May 14 and 15 in the Port of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) and May 16 in the Port of Arrecife, Muelle de los Mármoles.
The visit will be carried out on a first-come, first-served basis, until capacity is reached in the entrance area. The visits will be guided by the civil guards from the Maritime Service who serve on the ship itself, “Duque de Ahumada”, who will explain the work they carry out from said vessel. It is advisable to visit wearing comfortable shoes.
The oceanic vessel “Duque de Ahumada”
In September of last year, this new multipurpose ocean vessel was delivered to the Civil Guard. It was built in the Armón shipyards of Vigo, becoming part of the fleet of vessels of the Maritime Service of this Corps, being the largest.
The vessel has dimensions of 82.15 meters in length, 14 in width, and 4.7 in draft, featuring a helideck, five decks, an ROV (remotely operated submersible vehicle) for underwater inspection and search tasks, aerial surveillance drones, and two rigid boats for interception and rescue.
It has capacity for 56 crew members who would be distributed in 35 cabins, and a shipwreck room enabled for more than 100 people, equipped with separate space for women and children.
Additionally, it is equipped with a infirmary and hospital space with the possibility of direct telemedicine transmission with Madrid. Its operational capacity without touching port can be extended up to 30 days, with a range of 11,000 miles (20,400 km.), which extends the radius and duration of missions.
The equipment includes state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems. The main missions assigned to this ship, within the Strait Maritime Group Unit (Cádiz), are the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime, irregular immigration, Judicial and Governmental Police functions, inspection of ships and fishing and recreational vessels, fight against marine pollution and against marine archaeological plunder, as well as control and rescue operations at sea.
This ship has recently participated in two major cocaine interdiction operations in the Atlantic: Operation Abisal with the largest cocaine haul in history, 30 tons, and Operation Alfa-Lima with 11 tons of cocaine and 8.5 tons of hashish seized in a 14-day consecutive deployment.
