Crime in Lanzarote decreases in 2024 compared to the previous year, but sexual violence increases

The data reflects criminal offenses during the first nine months of the year, which also shows how sexual offenses have increased on the island compared to the same period in 2023.

Criminal offenses in Lanzarote have decreased by 1,427 between the months of January and September of this 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, with the total figure being 5,564, according to data from the Lanzarote Data Center. This translates into a year-on-year variation of 7.7% compared to 2023.

Regarding conventional crime, a total of 4,736 cases have been registered in Lanzarote, while in 2023 this figure reached 5,906, which represents a decrease of 8.4%.

The data reflects that up to this point there have been no intentional homicides in 2024, while in the previous year there were three. However, in the third quarter of this year there was an attempted homicide.

As for serious and less serious crimes of injury and affray, the figure so far reaches 119 cases, compared to 145 in the previous year. Meanwhile, drug trafficking offenses so far reflect 50 cases, 4.2% less if we compare it with the previous year when 57 cases were registered.

On the other hand, cases of theft have also decreased. By categories, robberies with violence and intimidation in these first nine months of 2024 have been a total of 61, unlike the 120 of 2023. Cases of robberies in homes and establishments reach 121 cases, while the previous year there were 221.

Regarding cybercrimes, until September of this year they reached 828 cases, unlike the 1,085 that were reported in 2023.

 

Sexual offenses increase

Sexual offenses in Lanzarote, however, have increased compared to 2023. According to the Data Center, offenses against sexual freedom and indemnity that have been registered so far are 109, a different figure from the past year which was 95.

Regarding sexual assaults with penetration, the cases that have occurred on the island this 2024 are 33, while in 2023 there were 21, which represents an increase of 135.7%.

 

Data from Arrecife, Teguise and Tías

By municipalities, criminal offenses in Arrecife from January to September of this year reflect a total of 2,109 cases compared to 2023, when there were 2,466, which represents 17.6% less.

Regarding Teguise, the cases reach 585, a lower figure if we compare it to the previous year when there were 720. For its part, Tías has registered a total of 1,071 cases for criminal offenses, while in the same period of the previous year there were 1,494.
