Arrecife recovers the monographic contest of the Canary dog in San Ginés

 The Presa Canario was once again the protagonist of the San Ginés Festivals with the recovery of the Monographic Contest of one of the most representative breeds of the archipelago. An event that, after several editions without being held, returned this Saturday, August 15, to the festive program of Arrecife, led by the Department of Animal Welfare of the Arrecife City Council, headed by Jacobo Lemes, and in collaboration with the Lanzaroteño Club of the Presa Canario.

The Ramírez Cerdá Park was the setting for this meeting, which brought together breeders, owners, enthusiasts, and lovers of the Presa Canario, on a day marked by participation, camaraderie, and commitment to the conservation and promotion of this breed.

The Councilor for Animal Welfare, Jacobo Lemes, highlights the importance of recovering this activity within the patron saint festivities of the capital. “We are very satisfied that the Presa Canario has once again had its space within the San Ginés Festivals. Recovering this contest also means recovering a part of our traditions and our heritage, and doing so with respect for animals and promoting responsible ownership,” he stated.

Lemes also values the work carried out by the Lanzaroteño Club of the Presa Canario and by all the people who made the contest possible. “I want to especially thank the Lanzaroteño Club of the Presa Canario for their involvement and their willingness to recover this event, as well as the participants, professionals, volunteers, and all the people who have worked to make this day possible. From the Department of Animal Welfare, we want to continue supporting initiatives that allow us to know, value, and care for our native breeds,” he adds.

During the contest, the participating specimens were evaluated in the different categories by judge José Serpa, while José Hernández provided technical support to the participants in terms of presentation and handling of the specimens, after also having developed a previous theoretical-practical session. The organization also counted on the work of commissioner Rosi Hernández and the presence and professional collaboration of the municipal veterinarian, Paula Sosa, ensuring the welfare and care of the animals during the activity.

From the Lanzaroteño Club of Presa Canario they conveyed their “enormous satisfaction” for the development of a day that, according to them, “was much more than a competition,” becoming a meeting between people united by their passion for the breed and their commitment to its conservation, improvement, and promotion.

The Club wanted to publicly express its gratitude to all participants, “regardless of the position obtained,” for the effort made to prepare and present their specimens, as well as to all other involved individuals.

Likewise, they conveyed a special thanks to the councilor for Animal Welfare, Jacobo Lemes, highlighting his support for activities that contribute to valuing the dog, responsible ownership, and, in particular, a breed deeply linked to the Canary Islands.

“For us, maintaining these activities also means preserving a part of our traditions and offering citizens the opportunity to learn closely about one of the most representative breeds of the Canary Islands,” they emphasized.

The organization highlighted that the work around the breed continues beyond each competition, through responsible breeding, care, training, and participation in activities that preserve its characteristics and promote its knowledge.
