On January 26, life changed completely for Italian resident in Lanzarote Salvatore Sinagra. The 30-year-old, originally from the Italian island of Favignana, in Sicily, was in a nightclub he frequented in the Matagorda shopping center, in Puerto del Carmen, when he was attacked. Since then, he has been struggling between life and death after being transferred urgently to the Doctor Negrín Hospital in Gran Canaria, where he is in an induced coma due to a brain hematoma.

According to the Civil Guard and sources close to the investigation, the alleged aggressor is a young Canary Islander, resident in Lanzarote and with numerous criminal records for violence. His arrest did not occur until last Saturday, February 1, six days after the attack, when the Benemérita managed to find his whereabouts after days of searching.

After being brought to judicial disposition, the Arrecife Duty Court ordered this Monday his provisional admission to prison, without bail. The Investigating Court number four of Arrecife is investigating him for a serious injury offense.

Regarding what happened in that Matagorda venue on January 26, the lawyer for the Sinagra family, Lara Lafontana, argues in an interview with La Voz that Salvatore Sinagra, "an affable and calm guy," received "a punch of enormous violence," which left him "on the ground convulsing." According to her hypothesis, which is supported by witnesses who were at the scene, his alleged aggressor left the area without providing assistance or showing interest in whether he was okay. Furthermore, she indicates that the "seriousness of the fact is that he attacks him without knowing him."

The lawyer, who will exercise the popular accusation in the case against the alleged aggressor, has contradicted the version given by the owner of the venue where the discussion began. Lafontana assures that there was no clash between them over a foosball table, but that the alleged aggressor "entered the venue with an aggressive attitude" and that all the victim did was "simply cross paths with him" and try to get him to relax. Thus, she assures that Sinagra went out to smoke at the door of the venue when the now detained allegedly delivered a strong punch. "He left him knocked out," she adds.

"He remains in critical condition, and for now, the consequences are unknown," says the family's lawyer. Salvatore Sinagra was helped by some witnesses who were in the venue and then attended to by the health teams. Although the Court is investigating the alleged perpetrator of the aggression for a serious injury offense, more offenses could be added, especially because the victim's life is in danger, according to the family's defense.
