A 25-year-old man suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest this Wednesday in a gym in Arrecife, from which he has been recovered by the staff of the Canary Emergency Service. The event took place shortly before 10 in the morning, when 112 received a notice that a young man had fainted and was unconscious in a gym located on Manolo Millares Street.
The first to arrive at the scene were agents of the Local Police, who tried to revive the patient by performing basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. While one local police officer performed the massage, another gym user, a soldier from the Air Force, performed the mouth-to-mouth technique. Afterwards, the SUC staff confirmed that the affected person was in cardiorespiratory arrest, so they applied a discharge with the semi-automatic defibrillator (AED), managing to recover the heart rhythm. The medical personnel of the medicalized ambulance continued to perform advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers and once the patient was stabilized, he was transferred to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in serious condition.
According to the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center of the Government of the Canary Islands, "the use of the AED by the SUC health technicians in basic life support ambulances allows analyzing, and restoring if necessary, the heart rhythm, thanks to the electrical discharges performed by this device".
