The Environment Area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote has initiated a sanctioning file for the circulation of six buggies in caravan outside of authorized roads, paths, or tracks in the Barranco de Las Piletas, in Guatiza, an action reported by agents of the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard and which "violates current regulations for the protection of the natural environment".

The events occurred on January 14, when agents verified that an organized excursion left the existing path to circulate through a trail and unauthorized terrain within an area classified as Rustic Land for Landscape Protection. According to the report, the participants had paid 180 euros per person to carry out the activity.

The Minister of Environment, Samuel Martín, emphasizes that “the Cabildo maintains a zero-tolerance policy against any activity that leads to the deterioration of our natural spaces or that violates environmental protection regulations. The enjoyment of the territory must always be compatible with its conservation”.

Martín adds that “the regulations exist to preserve a unique natural heritage and ensure that economic and tourist activities are carried out with absolute respect for the landscape and the environmental values of Lanzarote. Those who act outside the rules must assume the consequences”.

The file also includes a technical report that warns that the repetition of excursions of this type can cause disturbances to various protected species present in the affected area, including the majorero kestrel (Falco tinnunculus dacotiae), the majorero barn owl (Tyto alba gracilirostris), and the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus majorensis), listed as endangered.

The Environment Area reminds that the circulation of caravans of more than three vehicles outside the official network of routes in the natural environment is prohibited by regional legislation and that the Cabildo will continue to act firmly against any conduct that puts the conservation of Lanzarote's natural spaces at risk.
