The Technical Specialists in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (TEDAX) deactivate a potentially dangerous maritime signaling grenade in the vicinity of Playa de San Juan, Caleta de Famara (Teguise)

On May 16, 2025, the Civil Guard of Costa Teguise was alerted by telephone by a citizen who, while transiting the vicinity of Playa de San Juan, in the town of Caleta de Famara, noticed the presence of an object whose dimensions and characteristics were, in all respects, suspicious, to the point of considering the possibility that it was an explosive device. It should be noted that said object was located just 25 meters from the houses located in the area.

Once these facts were brought to the attention of the Civil Guard of Costa Teguise, the protocol on findings of possible explosive devices was activated, immediately notifying the TEDAX team of Lanzarote. A patrol from the Main Post of Costa Teguise proceeded to secure the area given the possible danger of the device.

Once on the scene, the TEDAX team, after adopting the appropriate security measures, carried out a first inspection, verifying that it was a maritime signaling flare of military use.
Once the device has been identified, it is neutralized, thus guaranteeing the safety of the place and allowing people to pass through again.

These grenades, approximately 46 cm long and 7 cm wide, contain a highly calorific substance inside, which, once activated, generates a column of smoke, making them visible over long distances. It is for these circumstances that in the event of finding these devices, they should not be touched or manipulated and the Civil Guard should be notified.

Advice in case of locating an explosive

In the event of locating any unexploded military device or explosive appearance, the Civil Guard recommends following these simple tips for your safety:

  • Do not manipulate the device and prevent anyone from doing so.
  • Move away from the area where the explosive is located.
  • Immediately notify the Civil Guard or the competent or nearest Security Corps, or failing that, 112.
  • Signal the area and the location of the explosive, keeping a prudent distance, not losing sight of it to prevent other people from approaching.
