A large emergency operation was activated on Sunday afternoon, January 25, after a call was received at 3:07 PM by the CECOES 1-1-2 reporting that four people were in distress in the Los Charcones area, in Playa Blanca, within the municipality of Yaiza.
According to the information provided, these are four young American nationals, aged between 19 and 21, students in Madrid, who were spending a few days in a vacation home in Arrecife. Two of them were dragged out to sea, while the other two managed to get out on their own from the breakwater, sustaining minor injuries. Both refused medical assistanceSubsequently, the helicopter of the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) managed to rescue a third person alive, while a fourth remains missing, whose whereabouts are unknownThe area where the events occurred was closed to swimming due to a yellow alert for strong surf in Lanzarote, with waves that could reach up to six meters in heightFirefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, the Civil Guard, and air assets participated in the operation, in addition to the Canary Islands Emergency Service, which dispatched a medicalized ambulance and another basic life support ambulance to the sceneThe search remained active until 8:00 PM this Sunday, at which point it was suspended due to lack of visibility and adverse sea conditions. The operation is scheduled to resume this Monday, January 26, at first light.
