The Rescue and Emergency Service in Lanzarote (Emerlan) moved to the Papagayo area on Monday night. After being alerted by the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center (CECOES) 1-1-2 that a sailboat was about to run aground and that its crew, except for the captain, were in the water.
Emerlan members traveled to the area with the boat GES-EMERLAN and, simultaneously, sent a rapid intervention vehicle by land. At the same time, they coordinated with the Local Police of Yaiza and Maritime Rescue.
Later, they were informed that the crew was safe. After interviewing them, they verified that they did not need medical assistance, although the skipper remained on board the sailboat. The boat remained in the callaos area while, on land, an approach was made together with the Local Police of Yaiza and the Civil Guard to try to get the man to leave the ship. The skipper refused to get off, but handed them a dog that was traveling with him.
Upon the arrival of the Salvamar Acrux, coordination was established for the maneuver. Meanwhile, the GES-EMERLAN boat remained in the area for safety, while the Salvamar Acrux approached the sailboat and threw a tow rope to land. With the support of the Local Police, the rope was handed over to the skipper. Finally, the anchor was cut and the Salvamar managed to dislodge the sailboat and tow it to Marina Rubicón.
The GES-EMERLAN boat escorted it to port. Once there, a leak was detected in the sailboat, so the Salvamar, with the collaboration of Emerlan, placed motor pumps. For security reasons, it was decided to transfer the boat to the travel for its stranding, a maneuver carried out by Maritime Rescue. The service ended at 00.25 hours in the morning.
