A hunter from Lanzarote has reported the poisoning of four of her dogs while hunting with her father and her 13-year-old son in Haría on October 6.
"We were hunting in the area and suddenly the animals began to feel ill," said the owner of the dogs, who states that they only saw the dogs "drink water" that was "near some beehives" in the area.
"We didn't see them eat anything, but I don't rule out that they could have eaten something, because it can happen that you don't see them," added this woman, who explained that they were with seven dogs, but only four were affected.
After that, and after communicating the facts in a WhatsApp group of hunters on the island, the president of the New Society of Hunters of Lanzarote put her in contact with a veterinarian, who attended to the animals.
"Now they are fine, they were touched for a couple of days, but thank God it seems that it was not too strong a poison and they survived, although I would also like them to take into account that in the hunters' group there are minors and my son suffered," said their owner.
Canine unit activated against poison
"It is not known if it was water or bait," said the president of the New Society of Hunters of Lanzarote, Antonio Félix, who considers that "it is a strange case." "Because if you go near a farm with vineyards, in which logically the farmers have to give a phytosanitary treatment, it may be the case that they have given it two or three days before the hunting day, that it rains that day, and that the dogs ingest the poison if they want water to hydrate from the leaves of the vineyards, but it was in an area where there were no vineyards," he pointed out, who believes that "it is more likely that they put a bait."
Thus, although he affirms that after what happened they went to the area and did not find anything, the New Society of Hunters of Lanzarote has decided to activate the canine unit created by the Government of the Canary Islands to detect poison in the field in the eastern islands, so that it inspects the area. "They come from Fuerteventura and we are waiting for them to do the service," he said.
