Moroccan police arrested 34 people, all of Moroccan nationality, this Monday in the Atlantic province of Tarfaya, in the south of the country, as they prepared to leave by boat to the Canary Islands.
A security source informed Efe that the police also arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with this case, who was wanted by Justice for his alleged involvement in the "organization of illegal immigration and human trafficking."
During this operation, which took place 14 kilometers south of the city of Tarfaya, capital of the homonymous province, the police seized an inflatable boat equipped with an outboard motor, 27 life jackets and other maritime navigation equipment.
The source added that the arrested man, who is allegedly involved in the organization of this attempted illegal emigration, was placed in "preventive detention."
He also added that the 34 intercepted emigrants were subjected to a judicial investigation, under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office, to identify all those involved in this criminal project.
In the case of those who are not involved in the organization of this activity, they are usually subjected to a routine police interrogation and then released.
