Trade unionists from the Canary Islands have also asked for the events surrounding the chambermaid who suffered an attempted rape in a hotel in Lanzarote and the possible "failure to provide assistance" not only by those responsible for the hotel, but also by its works council, to be "clarified".
"Their attitude towards this case of harassment or sexual assault leaves much to be desired, especially from a hotel that is part of one of the ten most excellent chains worldwide according to TripAdvisor", the union questions, echoing the complaint made public by the Las Kellys association and the 8-M Feminist Platform, who claim that when the young woman went to tell her superiors what had happened, they did not believe her or do anything, and that her union representatives in the hotel did not act either.
In addition, Trade Unionists from the Canary Islands assures that this worker also later went to the headquarters of Comisiones Obreras in Lanzarote "asking for protection and assistance, to which CCOO limited itself to sending her to the association of battered women of Mararía, evidencing that the unions do not have sufficient resolution capacity to guide victims against the crime of harassment and sexual assault that may be committed within companies, as well as by the hotel's own clients towards the workers".
"Obvious lack of equality plans and protocols"
"This case, like many other hidden and covered up cases, highlights the obvious lack and deficiency of equality plans and protocols for the prevention and protection of women in the workplace, as well as the lack of training for employers and their staff", warns Trade Unionists from the Canary Islands.
Thus, it defends that "everything possible must be done to ensure that workers feel protected and supported in their jobs, and that this violent and desperate circumstance is not repeated".
In addition, it recalls that the Organic Law for the effective equality of women and men determines the elaboration and application of equality plans and the prevention of sexual harassment and harassment based on gender.
It should be remembered that the Canary Islands Institute for Equality has also requested an investigation into the hotel, to clarify its attitude after what happened. Thus, although the perpetrator has already been convicted of a crime of attempted sexual abuse, the determination of responsibilities continues. And, according to Las Kellys and the 8M Platform, what the young woman's superiors did when she told them what had happened was to send her to work again in an area near the room where the events had occurred.
Regarding the name of the hotel, the associations themselves asked that it not be made public to protect the identity of the victim.
