Agents of the National Police of Arrecife have arrested a man, who has multiple police records, as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of illegal possession of weapons and theft with force, after being caught carrying a revolver that had been modified to restore its usability.
The investigation carried out by the Local Brigade of Judicial Police of Arrecife began on June 18 of the current year after the agents became aware that a person would be attempting to modify firearms, carrying out various actions to determine their identity and locate the weapon.
The inquiries allowed the investigators to surprise the suspect when he was in the vicinity of a street in the capital of Lanzarote carrying a "Astra .22 LR caliber" revolver, while he was trying to have a specialized professional make modifications to it.
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspect fled and even threw the weapon into an adjacent property, although the agents managed to locate and recover it.
Subsequent investigations determined that the seized revolver originated from a theft with force committed in a home in the municipality of San Bartolomé in 2017, where it had been stolen, among other items.
Although the weapon had been rendered inoperable at the time, investigators found that structural modifications had been made to the barrel with the aim of using it again, with only the incorporation of certain elements pending to restore its functionality.
The weapon was subjected to the corresponding expert examination by the Ballistics Forensics Laboratory of the Superior Headquarters of the National Police of the Canary Islands, the results of which allowed progress in the proceedings and the arrest of the investigated individual.
After the intervention and expert examination of the weapon, the agents located the suspect on September 21 in a parked van in Arrecife that he used as a dwelling, where he had barricaded himself with a dog.
Given this situation, judicial authorization was necessary to access the vehicle, and the individual was finally subdued and arrested.
Officers from the Local Police of Arrecife and personnel from the municipal animal health service also participated in the operation, taking charge of the animal.
The detainee, once the police proceedings were finalized, was placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority.
