The Lanzarote parliamentarian from the Canarian Nationalist Group, Cristina Calero, requested this Thursday in the RTVC Control Commission that the public television of the Canary Islands seek formulas that allow guaranteeing "the most complete coverage possible" of the Romería de Los Dolores in Lanzarote.

Calero recalled during her speech that every September the people of Lanzarote have an appointment that is part of the island's collective memory. “Every September, all of us from Lanzarote have a date in the calendar that doesn't need to be written down. It's a date that has been marked in our DNA since we were little,” she pointed out.

The deputy highlighted the significance of the pilgrimage to Mancha Blanca, which each year brings together people who fulfill their promises by walking from different points of Lanzarote and also from other places. A tradition that, she added, is not only linked to faith, but also to the identity of the island and the memory of a people who relive their history and their resilience in the face of the adversity of volcanic lava.

In this regard, the parliamentarian underlined the role that RTVC should play as the public television of the Archipelago. “The only channel capable of broadcasting an event with so much symbolism and identity is our TV, the Canarian TV,” she affirmed.

Calero stated that RTVC also has “the challenge of serving as a motor for social cohesion and being a bridge for eight islands with different needs but which aspire to have the same opportunities”. In her opinion, the celebrations specific to each island are part of that common identity that public television must help to make visible.

The deputy also emphasized the social dimension of these broadcasts, as not everyone can travel to Mancha Blanca to experience the Romería de Los Dolores. “Not everyone can fulfill the promise by walking to Mancha Blanca, either because they are far from home or because sometimes age does not forgive or an illness prevents it,” she explained.

During the commission, RTVC explained that the broadcast of the Romería de Los Dolores coincided this year with the Bajada del Cristo de Telde and that the decision was made to carry out two live broadcasts, shortening the coverage of Mancha Blanca.

In view of this situation, Calero argued that “no island should be left behind” and proposed seeking alternatives for cases where relevant events from different islands coincide.

The proposal of the Canarian Nationalist Group involves complementing the television broadcast with other formulas, such as its online broadcast through Canarias Play or through complementary recordings that allow enjoying the entire pilgrimage.

“It is difficult for a television channel to broadcast the entire pilgrimage because it is a long event, in which the carts arrive little by little in Tinajo, but it is not impossible,” said Calero, who opted for “combining formulas to cover as much television time as possible, taking into account these island celebrations.”

For the Lanzarotean parliamentarian, it is about finding alternatives that allow for the coverage of relevant events from the different islands to be compatible without giving up the possibility that each one can have its space on the public television of the Canary Islands.
